Impressive Tennyson goes from boy to man

Boxing

James Tennyson produced a stylish performance in the 2011 Ulster Seniors.

An unbeaten Paul Hyland from the Mac club boxed James in the semi-finals where James out-foxed and out-boxed the Mac-Man with an impressive high score 33 points to Paul Hylands 16.

In the other semi-final, Gerard Matthews went up against James Fryers from the Mac club, Gerard produced another entertaining 3 rounds of boxing but was unlucky to lose the bout by 2 points.  Coach Ralph McKay was delighted with his performance.
In the quarter-finals, Dan McShane boxed Kevin McIntyre from St. Josephs, having been 2 points up in the first round, Dan took a bad nose bleed which his corner couldn’t stop and on advice from the doctor, the referee stopped the contest.  This was his first taste of senior boxing.

In the finals, James Tennyson met James Fryers in an explosive 3 round battle.  Tennyson started slower of the two, Fryers settled into the fight and managed to land more accurate shots.  At the start of the second, Tennyson was 4 – 2 down and as the round went on, fryers started to tire but managed to extend his lead by 4 points.  In the last round, Tennyson started the more aggressive boxer and had Fryers on the back-foot, it was all action with Fryers holding on to the last bell.  when the final score was called, Fryers managed to hold onto his lead by 2 points with the final score ending 21 – 19.  Coach Ralph McKay was proud of how Tennyson boxed and being Tennyson’s first year at Senior level, believes Tennyson can only improve.
